knew Fred wouldn't let me in, so I came over and tapped on Cappy's window. It was all frosted over and I had to scrape it away so I could see in."
"Tell me what you saw."
"Like I told the other man, the only thing what I could see was a mess. There was broken glass all over the floor, chairs were tipped over, and it looked like someone had spilled something. It wasn't like Cappy to leave something like that. I knew she wasn't no angel, but she was a tidy one, the kind of person who cleans up a mess when she makes it."
"After seeing all that, what did you do?"
"I tapped on the window again, maybe a little harder than the first time, but I was tryin' to get her to come to the window."
"Then what?"
"Well, I crawled back across the shed roof and pounded on my own window, but it weren't no use. I could tell from lookin' in. I knew Fred had gone down to the pub."
"He would go off and leave you locked out on the top of the roof?" Machino asked. This was neither the time nor place, nor was Rosemary Markle the one to ask, but he couldn't understand why women let men do things like that to them.
Rosemary Markle nodded quietly.
